In celebration of the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center's 50th anniversary, experience and intersection brings together the work of acclaimed artist John Cleaveland and his mentor, the late Richard “Ole” Olsen, in a powerful exploration of artistic legacy, shared experiences, and creative influence.
Presented throughout the Center's upstairs galleries, the exhibition examines the enduring connection between teacher and student, highlighting how personal history, mentorship, and lived experience shape an artist's perspective. Through a compelling collection of works, visitors are invited to explore themes of memory, place, service, and human connection.
Olsen, a longtime University of Georgia professor and Vietnam veteran, profoundly influenced generations of artists through both his teaching and artistic practice. Cleaveland, one of his former students, has built a distinguished career known for evocative paintings that capture atmosphere, emotion, and landscape with remarkable depth and sensitivity.
Together, their work creates a thoughtful dialogue across generations, offering a rare opportunity to experience the intersection of two artistic journeys and the lasting impact of mentorship on creative expression.
