Memory & Meaning in the Rural Black Church
Since Emancipation, African American churches have served as vibrant spaces where faith, music, art, education, mutual support, and community have thrived. Join us as we celebrate the powerful legacy of rural Black churches in the South through a program featuring two speakers: the Reverend Dr. Avis Williams and Bob Reid, nephew of a pastor of Plainview Baptist Church, where many members of Morgan County's artistic Andrews family worshipped. The speakers will be followed by musical selections from a group led by Professor Emorja Roberson of Emory’s Oxford College.
Reception to follow in the MMCC Arts & Crafts Gallery.

BOOM! Trio ft. Lavahi
A few ofAtlanta’s greatest jazz musicians, includingthe primarydrummerfor the legendary Count Basie Orchestra, form together as the Boom! Trio. Boom! Trio explores a funk and soul-driven sound on the outer edge of jazz, often described as “Alternative Jazz.”
This force of modern jazz and composition is comprised of saxophone, drums, and 8-string electric guitar, and they are accompanied by vocal virtuoso Lavahi.

Renowned cellist Nick Ogawa and violinist Kathryn Koch compose and perform their own blend of modern orchestral folk music with live looping and harmonized vocals. Nicholas Jamerson's sound is a blend of Appalachian roots, country, rock, folk, bluegrass, and soul, with a strong emphasis on storytelling. He often incorporates his Appalachian background into a sound reminiscent of Sturgill Simpson, while also exploring more pop-oriented sounds. Joe Alterman Trio
Well-known and well-loved jazz pianist, Joe Alterman takes the stage with his trio and distinguished jazz vocalist Karla Harris for an evening of jazz standards and favorites from the Great American Songbook. Joe is one of the hardest swinging young pianists orthe jazz scene today, who began at NYU with a BA and Master's in Jazz Piano and has since performed at many world-renowned venues including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland, and Blue Note. Karla Harris, native of St.
Louis, was part of Portland, Oregon's celebrated jazz scene before relocating to the East Coast

Education in Black & White - Voices and Perspectives
A continuation of the themes in the Andrews Family Legacy Exhibit
On February 16 the program “Education in Black and White” will take place in the Cultural Center auditorium. This program is the first in a series to be produced annually during Black History month, presenting the themes of education, religion, farming, and segregation as revealed in the lives and experiences of the Andrews family in the permanent Andrews Family Legacy exhibit in the center.
