Emergence - Gary Hudson in Black & White

  • Madison-Morgan Cultural Center 434 South Main Street Madison, GA, 30650 United States (map)

Sunday, October 26th at 2:00 P.M. "Emergence - In Black and White" - the Artworks of Gary Hudson opens and you're invited to the opening reception!

The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center will present a unique exhibit of artist Gary Hudson's charcoal black and white works and figure studies beginning on Sunday, October 26.

The exhibit, entitled "Emergence- In Black and White," will be arranged studio style in both Gallery 1 and Gallery 2 at the Center to showcase the works in their rawest form, allowing Hudson's iconic voice and style to permeate the exhibit. The exhibit, according to Cathy Best, Visual Arts Committee chair, will be a total departure from past exhibits both in content and style of presentation. Hudson's widow Christie Hudson has worked with the committee to compile Gary's charcoal works, some never shown publicly, that encapsulate Hudson's life from an early, struggling artist to a time of critical and commercial success. The works have been curated by Christie Hudson and the Visual Arts Committee. "We like the idea of doing something unique," said Best. "There is a different vibe to it. It is going to be an interesting show." The exhibit will remain until January.

Hudson (1936-2009) was known as a 'Lyrical Abstractionist' and led a life as interesting and as compelling as his works. A Madison, Georgia resident from 2002 until his death in 2009, Hudson was a part of the California Beat Movement, associated with Andy Warhol and met Joan Baez and Bob Dylan during his Boston years. When Hudson was 20 years old he became a paraplegic following a vehicle accident while he was a U.S. Marine. His art career began soon after the accident in connection with his travels to California, France (where he resided in Cezanne's studio) then to New York where he earned an MFA from the Yale School of Art and Architecture in 1966, applying for entrance into the program when he was 30 years old. Hudson's work is currently on display at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens and others. The Center's main foyer will feature three large Hudson works leading to the galleries upstairs. Certain works on display will also be offered for sale, Best said, with some of the proceeds donated to the Center. Best said the Center was gratified to be given the opportunity to hold the exhibit. "I think it is remarkable what he accomplished," she said. "The works reflect a curious-minded man with inexhaustible talent. He lived quite a life."

Thank you to our generous sponsors.
