Beverly Buchanan is a 2026 Georgia Women of Achievement Inductee, and led a tremendous life, up until her passing in 2015 at the age of 74. Beverly called her sculptures and drawings of the small, often hand-built, homes she found throughout the American South “shacks,” a modest term that belies the magic she found in them—and then poured into her own art. “I want to give people who can neither read nor write but made all the measurements and built their own barns and shacks a different way of looking at themselves.” Upon her parents divorce, she grew up in South Carolina, and in 1962, Buchanan graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in medical technology from Bennett College, in Greensboro, North Carolina. She went on to attend Columbia University, where she received a master's degree in parasitology in 1968, and a master's degree in public health in 1969. After graduating, she worked in medical technologist for the Veterans Administration Hospital in the Bronx, as well as a public health educator for the East Orange Health Department. While working in New Jersey, Buchanan applied to medical school; although she was accepted, Buchanan decided not to go due to her desire to dedicate more time to her art. Part of this choice consisted of her decision to illustrate and tell the story of the scenes from her African American childhood. She is known for her vernacular architecture expressed through her artworks.
