MEMORY JUG MAKE & TAKE AT MMCC

The ceramic art works featured in the EARTH BOUND exhibit at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center are considered to be objects of beauty and value. But the stories within the pieces hold more complex histories --emotions such as loss, sorrow, and even grief over the death of a loved one. To honor such feelings in a creative and healing manner, local potter and educator Elizabeth Collins Hanes will lead a MEMORY JUG, Make & Take Workshop, on Saturday afternoon, July 9th from 2-3:30PM at MMCC.

Open to our community members ages 7-100, this family-friendly event is free.

Memory jugs have their origin with the Bakongo peoples who lived on the Atlantic coast of Africa in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. Enslaved Africans brought the art of memory jugs with them to America. Found primarily in the South, the jugs were said to have been used as grave decorations.

Most often the jugs are decorated with embedded trinkets including seashells, glass shards, jewelry, coins, mirrors or other visual reminders of a loved one.

Participants will create their own small jug with the use of craft clay. Then, while the surface is still damp, a variety of objects are embedded into the surface, including beads, buttons, coins, glass, hardware, mirrors, pipes, seashells, tools, tiny toys and watches.

Space is limited; registration is required.

Air-dried clay will be provided; workshop participants should bring their own small bag of trinkets/ meaningful objects they intend use on their Make & Take jug.

The 2-3:30PM Memory Jug Workshop is full - no longer taking registrations.
