In the mid-20th century, a remarkable family lived and worked in a small farming community located just south of Madison, Georgia. They engaged in the demanding labor of working the land and managed to forge a livelihood as sharecroppers. Despite the pervasive and unjust system of tenant farming that enveloped their family and the majority of the African American population in Plainview, Georgia, the Andrews family's art took root right alongside the cash crops they harvested each year. Through drawings, paintings, and written stories, the Andrews of Morgan County chronicled the pains and pleasures of growing up Black in the rural, segregated American South. Together, they make up a lineage of African American artists, writers, and civil servants whose contributions have significantly impacted the cultural landscape of their small rural community of Plainview and beyond.

The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center is proud to present an exhibition that brings together original works of art, archival material, and historical records to honor this exceptionally gifted family, deeply rooted in the agriculture and arts of the region. The Andrews Family Legacy: Rooted in the Agriculture and Arts of Morgan County is curated by Martina Dodd with exhibition design by John Williams of Shibui Design. The Exhibition Steering Committee is co-chaired by Betsy Morehouse and Wayne Vason.
