Martha Lower: Legacy of a Portrait Artist brings together a selection of Lower's paintings and portraits for a special exhibition at the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, offering a rare opportunity to experience the work of an artist whose influence continues to be felt throughout the region.
Lower began painting portraits in the 1970s and made Madison her home in 1979. Over the course of a career spanning more than three decades, she became known for sensitive, meticulously rendered portraits created in pastel, oil, and watercolor. Her work was collected by generations of local patrons, while her commissions reached well beyond Georgia, including portraits of three Presidents General of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution displayed at Memorial Continental Hall in Washington, D.C.
Her artistic practice was shaped by a lifelong love of literature, history, travel, and traditional methods of representation. Her work reflects that rich intellectual and cultural life, capturing not only the likeness of her subjects but something of their character and presence.
This exhibition celebrates an important chapter in Madison's artistic history and the enduring legacy of an artist who helped shape the community's cultural landscape.

The exhibition will remain on view through January 30, 2027.
